Graduate Neuroscience Program

Applications to the Graduate Doctoral Neuroscience Program

All students MUST submit the information listed directly below. The evaluation of applicants can only proceed once all materials have been received.

Welcome.  This page helps answer questions regarding admissions and the application process. Admission to the Doctoral Neuroscience Program is based on GRE scores, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and your personal statement. You will be best prepared for our program if you have successfully completed courses in neuroscience, biology, chemistry, and other sciences. Deadline for admission is February 1.

Additional information on Graduate Education is available on the University of Wyoming graduate education site.

Admission Requirements:  The Neuroscience Program does not have any absolute criterion for admission but applicants typically have:

  • an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale)
  • an undergraduate degree in a discipline that is a component of neuroscience, such as biology, psychology, physiology, chemistry, physics, or chemical or bioengineering.
  • scores of at least 149 Quantitative and 151 Verbal on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
  • 3 strong letters of recommendation to support your application
  • TOEFL scores (550- paper based; 79 iBT, or higher) for international students
  • prior research experience

The Neuroscience Admissions Committee evaluates the entire admissions package that includes all of this material. Deficiencies in one or two of the areas described above should not discourage interested applicants from applying. Applicants may be invited to interview on campus and all expenses are paid by the Neuroscience Program. Alternatively, applicants may be interviewed by telephone.

Students with an M.S. degree in Neuroscience or a related discipline are also encouraged to apply for admission to the Neuroscience Program. Students transferring to the Doctoral Program from other schools or programs may petition to apply previously earned graduate credits. The Neuroscience Admissions Committee will identify those credits that may be used toward the doctoral degree requirements.

Application Procedure: Applicants to the Doctoral Neuroscience Program must complete the Online Application.   Once you have established an Application you can upload the required material and also check on the progress of your application.  All materials must be uploaded as part of your application.  We require:

  • Application for Admission
    • Copies of all official transcripts
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • TOEFL scores for international students (The University of Wyoming’s school code for TOEFL is 4855.)
  • A one-page personal statement of your interests in the field of Neuroscience. In your personal statement, please describe general areas of interest and any specific research topics or techniques with which you have experience.  We use this information to link up perspective students with faculty advisors.  Often, students are admitted to the Neuroscience Program to work with specific faculty or in particular areas and the personal statement is helpful in this regard. We encourage students to read through the faculty research interests to get a feel for our expertise and the training opportunities that are available through the Neuroscience Program.  We strongly recommend that prospective students contact individual faculty for more information regarding their research programs and openings in the lab. If your interests are still broad at this point in time, indicate your general interests and graduate training goals in your statement.
