What is Student Success Services?

Student Success Services (SSS) is a program that strives to create an engaging environment for our students through a variety of meaningful learning opportunities structured to meet their unique needs. We serve students from enrollment to graduation, and assist them with overcoming economic, social, academic, and cultural barriers.

Our office acts as an additional advising center for students, and we provide tools for success in four vital areas of college-life management, including: 1) academic success, 2) university connectedness, 3) financial literacy, and 4) post-graduation and career planning.

SSS is a TRIO education program funded by the U.S. Department of Education, and as such, students must meet certain eligibility requirements to be accepted into the program. Eligible students include first-generation college students, students with limited or low-income, and students with disabilities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Student Success Services is a federally funded TRIO program designed to provide additional academic support for students who have academic need. We serve over 200 students each academic year at the University of Wyoming.

TRIO is the name of a general program created by the U.S. Department of Education, which includes seven different programs: Talent Search, Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/Science, Veterans' Upward Bound, Student Support Services, Educational Opportunity Centers, and the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. All TRIO programs can provide academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, financial guidance and support, as well as additional supports necessary for education access and retention. Learn more about TRIO by visiting the U.S. Department of Education's website.

SSS aims to increase retention and graduation rates for our participants. Our program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and motivates students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education.

SSS offers a variety of free services, including: academic and holistic advising, course selection guidance, individual and group tutoring, economic and financial literacy planning and guidance, financial aid assistance and planning, specialized events and workshops, major/career advising, and personal support.

All students in the program are assigned an advisor who only works with SSS students. This allows for a more personalized advising experience, with a professional who typically has a much smaller caseload than most academic advisors. Additionally, active SSS participants have access to priority registration, free cultural event vouchers, specialized events and workshops, a program scholarship each semester, and more.

SSS offers two opportunities for qualifying participants to earn our program scholarship, once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester. We can assist students with their annual FAFSA application process too, as well as other scholarship applications.

Additionally, SSS students with 60 credits or less that demonstrate unmet financial need may be eligible to receive additional grant aid. Please see your SSS advisor for more information!

A student is able to apply any time after they have been admitted to UW. They may complete a paper application or request a digital application, both of which are available on the SSS website or can be requested by emailing sss@uwyo.edu

Each student must maintain regular contact (at least three meetings, for a total of two hours) with their SSS advisor or other SSS staff each semester. Additionally, students must complete an Education Action Plan (EAP) with their advisor at the start of each semester. Students are also encouraged to take advantage of tutoring services and SSS events & workshops, when they are available to do so.

Student Success Services does not add to your class schedule, and we make every effort to provide support and services during times that work for you. Advising can always be scheduled around class and work times!

No. Once you are accepted into the program, student's may continue until they graduate. SSS provides services that help you along the entire path to graduation.

During your college experience, you may need some help regardless of your performance in high school. Many students discover that university life presents increased social, financial, and academic challenges typically not previously experienced in high school. We really encourage students to take advantage of all the resources available through our program. Even if you don't think you need the extra support, SSS provides many opportunities to meet new people, make connections, and build lasting professional relationships for years to come.
