Professional & Applied Experiences

Professional and applied experiences are the activities you will engage in outside of the classroom. You’ll take the knowledge, skills, and tools from your academic coursework and apply them to real-world challenges. A professional or applied experience will allow you to ‘try on’ different careers, gain hands-on experience, and enhance your employability after graduation. Students can earn up to 6 hours of academic credit for these experiences.

Enhance Your Employability

WHY & HOW?

All Haub students (except Sustainability minors) are required to complete a professional or applied experience that is related to their degree program. This can include a broad range of opportunities such as work, volunteer service, or research.

You will receive academic credit for your experiences through a Professional Development course taken during your senior year, but we encourage you to engage in as many applied experiences as possible throughout your academic career. This will enhance your employability and can help you decide on a career path.

ENR, ESS, and OL Students

The professional and applied experience requirement is an opportunity to connect your academic training and future goals. You should seek an
experience that provides one of the following outcomes:

  • direct exposure to complex environmental systems or scientific practices
  • practical experience in environmental and natural resource policy, management or decision processes
  • meaningful interaction with professionals in your field of study
  • hands-on experience that directs your career path

Schedule a meeting with Harper to discuss opportunities.

ORTM Students

Internships are required to fulfill ORTM degree requirements. To receive credit, your internship experience must be 400 hours, at least 10 weeks, and have “the potential to succeed as professionals at supervisory or higher levels in park, recreation, tourism, or related organizations.

Interns must receive a satisfactory performance evaluation from their supervisor. Please speak to the internship coordinator to determine if your proposed internship meets the requirements.

Schedule a meeting with Jordan to discuss opportunities.
