Where security meets simplicity

Information Technology is excited to announce the rollout of a new security software package, Admin By Request. This software provides a simplified and secure way to manage administrator privileges. Users who need to install software or change system settings can request temporary admin access via the application. After completing their tasks, these permissions are automatically revoked, which minimizes risk exposure.

Benefits of the new approach

Enhanced Security: By limiting admin access, the university reduces the risk of malware infections, unauthorized software installations, and other cyber threats.

Controlled Environment: Admin By Request allows for a controlled and monitored environment where elevated privileges are granted only when absolutely necessary.

User Convenience: Users can still perform essential tasks without needing to contact IT support for every minor change, thus maintaining productivity.

Deployment plans

Information Technology has begun to install Admin By Request on all newly purchased Windows computers as well as any PCs that are re-imaged. In the coming months, the software will be deployed to computers across campus in a phased approach. If you are an administrator, the installation will be seamless. Non-administrators will see an "Administrator Access" icon on their desktop to request 60 minutes of admin access, which is logged but does not require human approval.

Instructions for utilizing Admin by Request are available in this knowledge base article.

If you have questions regarding the deployment or use of Admin by Request, please contact the UW IT Help Desk via email at userhelp@uwyo.edu, chat at support.uwyo.edu, or phone at 307-766-4357 Option 1.
