Roommates

Living with a Roommate

During your time at the Univesity of Wyoming, you are likely to learn more about yourself and others than at any other time in your life. The students you are living with are students who, like you, are committed to succeeding academically, personally, and professionally.

Without a doubt, your year will be filled with many new experiences and memories. For many students, simply sharing a room may be a new experience. Having a positive relationship with your roommate, suitemate or floormates will add to the richness of your year. When you feel at home in your residence, you will be a better student and be better able to positively contribute to the University.

Selecting a Roommate

Whether you want to room with your best friend from high school or want to live with someone new, finding your roommate in the residence halls is an important step toward a rewarding year in your new home. If you find someone who might be a potential roommate, send a roommate invitation!

Even if you have completed your contract, you can still add a specific roommate through the end of June. To room with a requested roommate, you both must be in the same Living Learning Community (LLC), or at least one of you must have selected ‘No Preference’ of community options. Want to update your profile survey questions? You are welcome to change these as well! Simply log back into the housing portal and make your updates. While most areas of the contract will not allow changes once complete, these two pages can still be modified.

Should We Room Together?

Setting expectations early can ensure the best possible roommate experience. Roommates will receive a checklist of discussion points to talk over during their first days on campus, but if you and a friend are interested in rooming together, take a few moments to discuss the following before you submit your applications:

  • What time do you think you'll generally go to bed?

  • How do you feel about borrowing/using each others' belongings?

  • How will you handle visitors?

  • Do you plan to study regularly in your room or prefer to study elsewhere

Contacting Your Roommate

When you view your roommate information, we know that many of you will visit social networking sites as a first step. We encourage you to contact your new roommate(s) directly before making any judgments.

Contact information for your roommate(s) can we found on the Room Assignment email that you will recieve at the end of July. Didn't recieve an email by July 31st? Send us an email!

The first step to developing positive roommate relationships is getting to know a little more about your roommate(s). Try some of the following questions or open-ended statements to help break the ice:

  • One of my favorite places to spend time is...

  • I would describe my friends back home as...

  • My favorite movie is...

  • The extracurricular things I'd like to become involved in are...

  • If I could have any job, I would...

The same premise applies when interacting with your neighbors.Your responsibility as a community member is to respond to the needs of others in a manner that is characterized by respect and consideration. If you are having problems with your roommate(s) or neighbors, and need assistance in addressing the issue, please see a hall staff member. They are well trained in resolving conflicts and are eager to assist you in developing an effective roommate relationships with your roommate(s) and neighbors.

The skills you will build to maintain relationships founded upon respect, consideration, and open communication will help you long after your have graduated from UW. Some of the skills that will assist you in developing a positive relationship with your roommate(s), suite-mate and floor-mates are:

  • Tolerance For Ambiguity: How well do you deal with things that are unexpected or unclear?

  • Flexibility: You will not always have the opportunity to dictate the course of interaction.

  • Willingness To See Another Person’s Point Of View: This will increase your knowledge!

  • Patience: Some of the best things take time and commitment.

  • Set a meeting time during the first week of living together with enough time to address all of the areas of the Roommate Agreement.

  • Work together to determine the content of your Roommate Agreement.

  • Take turns responding to each item before going to the next one.
