The last semester of the Basic BSN program contains the Capstone Practicum, a precepted final clinical course that assists students in synthesizing basic concepts of professional nursing. Students gain confidence, practice clinical reasoning and leadership skills, communicate effectively with the interprofessional team, apply ethical decision-making skills and develop evidence-based practice. Check out three of the senior's experiences below:
My capstone was spent at Ivinson Memorial Hospital in the Family Care Unit. This unit provides care for pediatrics, OB (Women's Health), and Labor and Delivery...I came into this semester with a strong desire to care for pediatric patients but have found that I enjoy Labor and Delivery. This was actual a bit surprising to me. While I still am shooting for pediatrics, I realize that there are many avenues of nursing and can find interesting aspects and joy in different areas. I have spent my capstone at the David Walsh Cancer Center at Sterling Regional Medical Center in Sterling, Colorado in the infusion center. From the experience I have decided 100% that I am most passionate about oncology/infusion Therapy. The patients are the most inspiring, fascinating, and kindhearted individuals I have had the privilege of working with, and I would love to continue to do so. More than just nursing skills, I am learning about holistic care. The care of a patient with cancer involves far more than just provision of chemotherapy. My capstone experience at Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis, Wyoming has made me aware that every day in nursing will be different and challenging and that I still have much to learn. I spent most of my time on the Medical / Obstetric Floor and in the Emergency Room, but also experienced the Ambulatory / Surgical Unit. I was surprised at the diversity of health concerns and problems that I was able to observe during my clinical experience. [Click on Laura's name above to read specifics about her experience.]
