Thank you for your interest in the Energy and Petroleum Engineering Graduate Program. We are excited that you are considering graduate studies at the University of Wyoming. Below, you will find important information about the application process, including eligibility requirements, deadlines, and application materials. If you are seeking a funded graduate assistant position, we encourage you to connect with our faculty members to learn about potential openings in their research groups.
The Department of Energy & Petroleum Engineering admits students for Fall, Spring, and Summer start dates. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, and we encourage you to apply early. While there are no strict deadlines, we will continue reviewing applications until all available positions are filled. This gives you the flexibility to apply at any time leading up to your preferred start term.
It is strongly recommended for prospective international students to submit their applications as early as possible. Additional time is required to process international applications and prepare necessary immigration documents. Admitted international students may need extra time to obtain their F-1 student visa and prepare for arrival on campus.
The minimum criteria for consideration to graduate programs are listed on the Energy and Petroleum Engineering Department's Page. In summary, graduate admission is open to students who meet the minimum requirements as shown below.
Bachelor's degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, on a 4.0 scale.*
If you have a graduate degree, then also required is a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better, on a 4.0 scale, if applicable. Please note that a master's degree is not required to enter the Ph.D. program.
International applicants must meet the minimum requirements for English Proficiency set by the University of Wyoming. Test scores must be dated within the previous two year to be considered valid.
*Professional Track M.Eng. applicants need a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
All incoming M.S. and Ph.D. students must have an adviser. These applicants are responsible for contacting faculty members to find an adviser.
The department will accept self-funded students for the Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) , Master of Science (M.S.), and Dual MBA/MS programs. The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program will not accept self-funded students. Ph.D. students must have either a funded graduate assistantship provided by their adviser, or a sponsorship/industry-cooperative agreement.
Quick Start Applicants: Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25, and a minimum GPA of 3.5 in Petroleum Engineering courses. In addition, two of your recommendation letters must be from EPE faculty at UW.
M.S. or M.Eng. with Drilling Focus Applicants: Contact our department (pete-info@uwyo.edu) to learn more about the Joseph and Stephanie Leimkuhler Scholarship that is open to U.S. Citizens or Green Card Holders.
Dual MBA/MS Applicants: You must be recommended for admission by both the College of Business MBA program and the Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering to enroll in this program. Please notify the department (pete-info@uwyo.edu) and the College of Business (cobgradprograms@uwyo.edu) that you are applying for the joint program.
The Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering may grant conditional admission on a case-by-case basis.
Applications must be submitted via the University of Wyoming's online application system, which requires the payment of a $50 application fee. This fee cannot be waived by the department or admissions. Applications must include the following documents uploaded with the online application:
Complete unofficial transcripts of all prior college-level coursework,
Current resume or curriculum vitae,
Recommendation letters from at least three academic or professional references,
A statement of purpose, and
Unofficial test score certificates for English Proficiency examination, if applicable.
Dual MBA/MS Applicants: You must submit both the Petroleum Engineering Dual Degree MS and Business Administration MBA Dual Degree applications for consideration.
Applications will not be reviewed or accepted until all required documents have been submitted and the application fee has been paid. Completed applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants selected for their respective program will be notified via email with a department offer letter outlining the start date and any funding offer, if applicable. Upon receipt of the signed offer letter, the application will be processed by UW admissions.

Graduate assistantship positions are selected and hired by faculty. You must contact faculty directly to learn about available opportunities in their research groups. Please understand that the number of graduate assistantships is limited. Each faculty member can only support students if they have available funding and time to work with the student.
Graduate assistants receive full tuition, fee, and student health insurance funding, in addition to a monthly stipend. The University of Wyoming requires that funded graduate students receive a minimum stipend amount. Your faculty adviser can answer questions about the graduate assistant packages.
If you are not selected for a graduate assistant position, and are unable to pay for your education by your own means, you can explore other funding opportunities.
In addition to scholarships provided directly from the UW Scholarships & Financial Aid Office, students can apply for external scholarship and fellowship opportunities. There are various opportunities that can lower (or even cover) the cost of attending UW, look for: graduate fellowships, scholarships from professional associations (SPE, AADE, Texas Alliance of Energy producers, etc), and industry/company scholarships. International students may also find funding from their home country or government.
Our department encourages industry/company sponsorship for graduate and undergraduate education. Students can study remotely in the M.Eng. program, or attend a program in person with the added benefit of cooperative research projects. Contact us (pete-info@uwyo.edu) to discuss student sponsorship for your employees or future employees.
Visit the School of Graduate Education Financial Assistance page for more information on financing graduate education at UW.
Our graduate programs are billed at the main-campus graduate tuition rate, or the distance graduate online program tuition rate. Explore the Cost of Attendance and Tuition and Fees webpages for more information.
