The University of Wyoming’s Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering offers a rigorous ABET-accredited education that prepares students for rewarding careers within the energy sector. Our distinguished faculty expose students to all facets of the field through coursework, electives, seminars, and hands-on research experiences. Now, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology students have a dedicated path to complete a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Wyoming.

Get a head start on your B.S. by taking three online summer courses before you arrive on campus in the fall. Students must apply by April 1st to be admitted for the summer semester. Start your junior year in the fall and finish the B.S. program in two years, including three courses during the summer term. Students must apply by June 1st to be admitted for the fall semester.

Get on-the-job experience—and possibly job offers—by completing internships. UW petroleum engineering students have interned at Anadarko, BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Hess, Kuwait Oil Co., Matador, Noble Energy, Royal Dutch Shell, Turkish Petroleum, True Oil LLC, Baker Hughes, Encana and others. 

As a requirement for graduation, UW students must take the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE Exam), which is used to apply to any U.S. state’s engineering board. Qualifications for the FE exam can be transferred to APEGA.

 

International citizens who study in the United States with an F-1 Visa may remain in the US to gain additional training and work experience for at least one year after completion of their degree with the Optional Practical Training. Canadian citizens may work in the United States as part of the NAFTA Professionals TN Visa type. US employers may also sponsor international citizens under the H-1B visa type.

  • $40 Application Fee
  • Certified and attested transcripts from high school or from each college or university attended

  • Copy of Passport
  • U.S. Citizens & U.S. Permanent Residents are not considered international students even if they live outside the U.S.
  • Proof of English Proficiency for Non-Native Speakers.

  • Minimum TOEFL: 71 iBT
  • Duolingo: 100 for most majors
  • Minimum IELTS: 6.0

Incoming undergraduate students must confirm their enrollment by May 1 prior to the upcoming fall semester in order to be eligible for any financial aid, scholarships or commitments awarded to them by the University of Wyoming.

 

Some available funding includes:

  • Pokes Transfer Commitment - Available to first-time, entering non-resident and international transfer students seeking their first bachelor's degree. Annual awards of up to $8,000 renewable for up to 3 academic years.
  • Children of Alumni Benefit - Available tuition benefit (150% resident rate) for entering non-resident students who are children of UW graduates.  
  • Eresman Family Engineering Endowment Scholarship – Competitive scholarships of up to $10,000 annually for undergraduate and graduate students from the Sothern Alberta Institute of Technology and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology interested in transferring to UW in pursuit of an energy and petroleum engineering degree.
  • Stan and Jane Grad Petroleum Engineering Scholarship – Competitive scholarships for petroleum engineering students that are transferring from SAIT or NAIT to continue their education.
  • Kostenuk Petroleum Engineering Scholarship – Trent Kostenuk of Houston, Texas created a non-endowed scholarship for Canadian students studying petroleum engineering at UW. Trent received his petroleum engineering degree in 2016 and came to UW from SAIT.
