An interdisciplinary course in controlled environment agriculture, has been offered
during the summer of 2024 and 2025, titled CEA Principles and Applications – AGRI 4990 – 01. This highly cross-disciplinary research class, stemming from the WIP effort
for CEA, means to provide students with basic knowledge of controlled environment
agriculture while involving them in industry collaborations, further internships and
training opportunities. During the second year, the course has involved – besides
UW undergraduate and graduate students – students from the Central Wyoming College,
Sheridan College and one out-of-state student from North Carolina.
The NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates in CEA (REU Site) kicked off at UW led by the former C-CEA Director, Dr. Wang (Civil & Architectural
Engineering Dept.) and Dr. Keith (Family & Consumer Science Dept.). Research themes
rotate every year until 2028. Students worked on computer vision (faculty mentor:
Yaqoob Majeed), reinforcement learning (faculty mentor: Zejian Zhou), and life cycle
analysis (faculty mentor: Jake Hawes and Roger Coupal), with 8 students from across
the United States were supported to spend their summer in Laramie and work daily with
their mentors and taking part to the AGRI4990 class.
