Emergency Procedures
- Activate nearest fire alarm pull station
- Call 911 or University Police Dispatch (Non-Emergent 766-5179)
- Evacuate immediately using nearest safe exit or Area of Rescue Assistance
- Do not use elevators
- Proceed to assembly areas shown on Emergency Evacuation Maps and Building Emergency Action Plan
- Do Not Re-enter building until cleared by Emergency Responders or UWPD

Fire Prevention Guidelines
- Keep exits and corridors clear at all times
- Remove combustible waste daily
- Use only UL approved extension cords and power strips
- Store combustibles away from ignition sources
- Never leave cooking unattended
- Never leave portable heaters unattended or within 36” of combustible materials
Fire Extinguisher Use (PASS)
Always Activate 911 Response First
Do not attempt to fight a fire unless it is small and you are trained.
- Pull the pin
- Aim at the base of fire
- Squeeze the handle
- Sweep side to side
Reporting Hazards
- Blocked exits
- Missing or discharged extinguishers
- Obscured or Inoperative Exit Signs
- Missing or Alarming AED Devices
- Damaged electrical equipment
- Chemical spills – Call 911 if Health or Life Threatening
Fire & Life Safety Checklist
- I know at least two exit routes from my workspace
- I know where the nearest fire alarm pull station is located
- I know the location of the nearest fire extinguisher
- I understand how to use a fire extinguisher (PASS)
- I have reviewed the Building Emergency Action Plan (BEAP)
- I have reviewed the Emergency Evacuation Map and Assembly Areas
- I have not blocked any exits or corridors
- I have checked electrical cords and devices for damage
- I understand Hot Work permit requirements (if applicable)
- I know who to contact for reporting safety hazards
Electrical, Laboratory & Hot Work Safety
- Use UL-listed equipment only
- Do not overload electrical outlets
- Do not daisy-chain power strips
- Report damaged cords or overheating equipment immediately
- Do not run electrical cords under carpets, doors, ceilings or through walls
- Follow chemical hygiene plans
- Store chemicals by compatibility
- Do not store glass above eye level
- Use proper PPE at all times
- Keep fume hoods closed when not in use
- Hot work requires a permit
- Maintain fire watch when required
- Remove combustibles from area
- Keep extinguishers within 30 feet
