About the Ph.D. in Marketing and Management

UW’s Ph.D. in Marketing and Management is a highly regarded program that prepares students for ambitious careers at top research institutions. During this program, you’ll take core courses on strategy, research methods and consumer behavior. You also have the opportunity to specialize in one of five concentration areas: consumer and organizational behavior, consumer culture, sales management, innovation and entrepreneurship and sustainability and well-being. In the second year of the program, students learn to teach under the supervision of an experienced educator.

All students are fully funded and work alongside accomplished faculty to complete research projects. Outside of the classroom, students are invited to present their work at international conferences and participate in various events on campus, including semesterly skills seminars.

The Ph.D. in Marketing offers five concentration options. Students may select an area of specialization and take courses specific to that concentration.

Concentration options include:

  • Consumer and Organizational Behavior: Study the reasons why consumers and organizations buy goods and services.
  • Consumer Culture: Learn about how the values and norms in various societies affect advertising and purchase patterns.
  • Sales Management: Sales are key to the operation of any successful business and marketing campaign. Understand how to run successful sales teams.
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Learn to start, scale and operate a successful business.
  • Sustainability and Well-Being: Get well-versed in managing a sustainable business focused on the well-being of people and the planet.

Accreditation

We are proud to offer the highest quality AACSB-accredited education to our students. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation indicates a high standard of excellence in research, teaching and curriculum.

AACSB ACCREDITATION

This program is a tight-knit community that engages in many professional and social activities as a group. Our students are active in graduate student organizations across campus, with many serving in leadership roles. Students are additionally encouraged to participate in College of Business events, networking events and UW community outreach.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

All accepted students receive full funding and are immediately integrated into our research and teaching programs. You’ll have the opportunity to complete research alongside faculty and present your work at seminars and international conferences. UW’s College of Business has a behavioral lab and all of the necessary equipment and software needed for students to conduct and publish high-quality research. Research funding is available through UW’s research awards and grants. Students also receive funding through grants and competitions offered by professional associations, including AMS and AMA.

 

The Ph.D. in marketing and management is run by a group of highly accomplished, prominent scholars. The program director is Dr. Linda L. Price, an award-winning professor who has mentored numerous Ph.D. students who have become scholars at top research universities. Dr. Jeffrey Covin is also key to our program. He is a leading scholar in entrepreneurship, leadership and innovation. Many other outstanding professors work in the UW Department of Marketing and Management, including Dr. Ronn Smith, who serves as Senior Associate Dean, Dr. Mark Peterson, who has a background in macro-marketing and sustainability and Dr. Molly Burchett, who is a top scholar in marketing strategy and sales. Dr. Elizabeth Minton is another excellent member of our department who is widely published in belief systems, religion and sustainability.

Dr. Mya Groza is a 2014 alum of the Ph.D. in marketing and management program. Dr. Groza currently serves as an Associate Dean at the University of Idaho.
