Petroleum Engineering involves all aspects of oil exploration and development, upstream, midstream and downstream; from drilling and completions to identifying and characterizing reservoirs, and all aspects of production. Petroleum engineers also find new ways to extract oil and gas from older wells and employ new technology to
uncover resources that just a few years ago were unimaginable. UW offers courses that prepare students for careers in petroleum and other energy-related fields. Our state-of-the-art equipment and facilities provide higher levels of research capabilities in all degree programs. In addition, our award-winning faculty create innovative and rigorous research and development opportunities for graduate study. Because of U.S. predominance in petroleum technology, career opportunities are available all over the world.

Scholarships


The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences offers more than 275 merit-based scholarships per year. Students are automatically considered for these awards when they submit the General Application in WyoScholarships. We also offer many scholarships and opportunities for residents and out-of-state students.

 

Admissions Requirements

 
The requirements for undergraduate and graduate degrees differ. Undergraduate admission is on a “rolling basis”, meaning you can apply anytime leading up to the next available semester start date. The University of Wyoming's graduate program admissions requirements vary by program.

At the University of Wyoming Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering we have a long history of contributing to the economic health of the university and the state. Providing an education built on a solid engineering foundation, and adding the specific building blocks to make our petroleum engineers some of the best in the industry over the last 100 years.

Our vision is committed to providing outstanding petroleum engineering education, conducting internationally recognized research in key focus areas, and improving the well-being of the people of Wyoming and the world through education, technical innovation and economic development.

Our mission is to provide outstanding, contemporary, ABET-accredited education in petroleum engineering to highly-qualified undergraduates, who will serve as an economic resource for Wyoming and the world, as well as provide excellent, research-based graduate educations at the master's and doctoral levels in petroleum engineering to top students who will drive technical and economic innovation. 

The petroleum engineering curricula emphasizes connecting-the-dots between classroom lessons and their real-world applications through professional development and research opportunities. With petroleum engineering faculty members conducting internationally recognized research in key focus areas including interfacial and pore-scale transport in porous media, reservoir management and stimulation, enhanced oil recovery and much more, there’s no shortage of high-impact research for students to get involved in!

Revolutionizing Research

The University of Wyoming Engineering, Education, and Research Building (EERB) is one of the most advanced and collaborative engineering learning facilities in the nation. The building, a key part of the Tier-1 Engineering Initiative, was made possible by generous private donations and a significant investment by the Wyoming Legislature. The initiative is designed to promote engineering education, workforce training and research relevant to the economic interest of Wyoming. Inside spaces include a new shop and student project areas; teaching and computer labs in an active-learning configuration; reconfigurable research labs with associated office and collaborative spaces; meeting/conference rooms; and an expanded drilling simulator facility.
