The Job Hunt: How long does it take?
By Katrina Clymer, Academic Advising Professional
So, how long does it take to get a job? Finding a job can be a lengthy process. Depending on the employer, pay grade, and type of work you will do, prepare yourself for at least a month long wait before knowing if you’ve landed your dream job. This may sound extreme but when you consider the time it takes to prepare your resume and cover letter, submit your application, receive an invitation to interview, interview, wait for an offer, and then start working- the time frame makes more sense.
Contemplate looking for jobs early in your college career. Searching early will help you learn more about yourself and what you are looking for- i.e. Are you most concerned with rate of pay, location, or time away from family and friends? Additionally, researching listings will help you get an idea of what attributes employers want to see in their employees. Knowing as much as possible about potential employers will only serve to benefit you when you begin to tailor your resume and eventually interview.
With so many options available on job boards your search may seem overwhelming at times. Rest assured, the more you know about yourself, what the employer is looking for, and what type of job you want, the easier it will be to filter through listings and get your applications submitted!
