Energy Resource Management and Development Students Attend 2023 AAPL Annual Meeting

Students in the School of Energy Resources (SER) Energy Resource Management and Development (ERMD) degree program attended the 69th Annual meeting of the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL) in Huntington Beach, Cali.

Senior Jacob Schneider of Cincinnati, Ohio attended the meeting alongside rising junior Kendall Klos of Johnsburg, Ill. Both students are pursuing their degree in the Professional Land Management (PLM) concertation of the ERMD program.

The pair were two of only a handful of students from the 11 accredited professional landman programs across the nation that made the trip.

“I was proud to represent UW at the AAPL annual meeting,” says Klos. “During my time at the conference I was able to network with industry professionals, connect with other student representatives, and gain advice and encouragement for my journey to becoming a landman. It’s opportunities like this that remind me to be grateful for the people who make these experiences happen and support me along the way.”

The AAPL is the premier organization for the land profession, providing resources for support, ethical standards of practice, career advancement and legislative advocacy. The annual meeting is a widely attended event for land professionals all over the country to stay up to date on current energy topics, foster valuable networking connections, and to encourage sound stewardship of all energy and mineral resources.

“During this conference I was able to network with fellow peers and industry professionals from across the country and gain an invaluable insight into the current state of the energy industry through multiple seminars, speeches, and panels,” says Schneider. “I look forward to attending many more events like this as I progress in my career and am excited more than ever for what the future of this industry has in store.”

Righetti is UW’s Occidental Chair in Energy and Environmental Policies and an expert on the law and policy related to carbon capture, storage and pore space. While at AAPL, Righetti moderated a panel on carbon capture and sequestration at the conference, showcasing her expertise on the subject.

“Having students attend AAPL events, including the annual meeting, is something that we have really prioritized within our academic program at SER,” says Koski. “Not only is it a tremendous opportunity for our students to get facetime within the community of land professionals, the educational value of attending cannot be overstated. Hearing from the leading minds in the industry on current and relevant topics really encapsulates what they are learning in the classroom on a wider and applied scale, and we know that it has lasting positive impacts on their future careers. I’d especially like to thank AAPL for their sponsorship of student attendance which makes a real difference in our ability to send students to this great event.”
