Returning UW Students

We're happy your journey has brought you back to UW. If you are a previous UW student who has not completed a degree and you have taken more than one semester off since the last time you enrolled, you will need to consult this page for the next step in gaining admission.

The process of re-enrolling at UW will depend on how long you have been gone from UW, if you've taken college coursework since you left, whether you are a graduate or undergraduate student, and your status as a student when you left UW.

Undergraduate students

  • If less than one academic year has passed since you last took UW coursework and you have not taken courses elsewhere, you may simply schedule an advising appointment with your advisor, then register through WyoWeb.

  • If less than one year has passed since you were last enrolled at UW and you have taken courses from another institution, you are not required to reapply, but you are responsible for having official transcripts sent to the UW Admissions Office so that credit may be evaluated and applied toward your degree at UW (if transferable).

  • If more than one academic year has passed since you last took UW coursework, you must complete the Returning UW Students' application for admission. You will not be required to pay the application fee again.

  • If you left UW on academic suspension, in addition to completing the required admission actions above, you must also submit a Petition for Reinstatement through Advising, Career, and Exploratory Studies (ACES). To re-enroll, you will need to be admitted to UW AND your petition will have to be approved by ACES. Reinstatement Petitions must be submitted 15 days before the start of the semester for which you are seeking reinstatement.

Graduate Students

  • Students enrolled in a graduate program who are absent from UW for one year or less do not need to reapply, but must connect with their graduate advisor for permission to begin taking coursework again.

  • Graduate students absent from UW for longer than one academic year must reapply. You should connect directly with your academic department regarding the admissions process.

Next Steps for Admitted returning students

Check Academic Standing at UW

If you left UW previously on academic probation, you will be required to obtain a 2.0 GPA at UW during your first semester to avoid academic suspension. If you are unsure as to your academic status with UW as you re-enroll, please contact the Office of the Registrar at (307) 766-5272.

If you left UW on academic suspension, in addition to completing the required admission actions above, you must also submit a Petition for Reinstatement to the academic department for which you belonged at the time of your departure from UW. The Petition for Academic Reinstatement can be downloaded at this link. To re-enroll, you will need to be admitted to UW AND reinstated by your academic department.

If you are returning to UW and have taken college courses elsewhere since your last enrollment at UW, you must be sure to have your final college transcripts sent directly to the UW Admissions Office when they become available. Your admission is not final until the final transcripts are received, which can hold up scholarships and financial aid.

Advising and Registration

Returning students should contact an advisor to discuss advising options and registration time.

Final Transcripts (if returning with transfer credits)

If you are returning to UW and have taken college courses elsewhere since you left UW, you must have your final college transcripts sent directly to the UW Admissions Office when they become available. Your admission is not final until the final transcripts are received, which can hold up financial aid.

Federal Financial Aid and Scholarships

Students who would like to be considered for need-based assistance must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The priority deadline for students entering in the fall is March 1. For more information, visit the Web site at www.uwyo.edu/sfa, or contact Student Financial Aid at (307) 766-2116. Students are encouraged to review and apply for UW scholarships. Deadlines exist for many scholarship opportunities.

Residence Life and Dining Services (RLDS)

While returning students are not required to live in university housing, affordable, convenient options do exist on campus. Visit our Living site, or contact the main RLDS Office at (307) 766-3175 to learn more about residence halls and university apartments.
