IT Purchases Windows 10 Extended Support for Campus Computers

In January 2025, Information Technology began notifying the campus of the Windows 10 end-of-support date, which is scheduled for October 2025. Since the original notifications were shared, over 2100 computers across campus have been updated to Windows 11, greatly reducing the number of machines still running the older operating system. While significant strides have been made in upgrading computers, over 700 campus machines are still running Windows 10.

Action taken

To ensure the security and stability of our campus computing environment and to limit the adverse impact on users, Information Technology has purchased extended support licenses. These extended support licenses will enable UW-owned Windows 10 computers to receive security updates for an additional year, extending the machines' life until October 2026.

What you need to do

The extended support license will be automatically pushed out to all Windows 10 computers connected to the uwyo domain, and no action will need to be taken by users. If you have a UW-owned computer that is running Windows 10 and is not on the uwyo domain, please reach out to the IT Help Desk, and they can help install the extended support key to your computer. The Help Desk can be reached by email at userhelp@uwyo.edu, chat at support.uwyo.edu, or phone at 307-766-4357 Option 1.

Planning ahead

Most of the computers still running Windows 10 do not meet the minimum requirements to run Windows 11 and will need to be replaced. Please plan for a replacement within the next year.

If you have a question on whether your computer can be upgraded or will need to be replaced, please fill out the Windows 11 Upgrade Inquiry form.
