Classical Greek & Roman Civilizations

Welcome to the Classics Section of UW's Department of Modern & Classical Languages.  As a department of world languages, literatures, and cultural studies, we prepare our students for life and careers in an increasingly global world. Our program in Classics provides students an understanding of classical Greek and Roman civilizations, literatures, and political thought, which form the basis of Western belief systems, social norms, and ethical values.

The Classical Civilizations Minor

The Core (one course on Greece and one on Rome from these selections):

CLAS 2020 Classical Greek Civilization (3) or HIST 2120 Greece & Ancient Near East (3)

CLAS 2040 Classical Roman Civilization (3) or HIST 2130 Ancient Rome (3)

The Electives (12 hours required): All electives must be at the 3000 or 4000 level.

At least 12 credit hours in your minor must be from courses not counted in your A&S major. But all other credit hours over 12 can be doubled counted, i.e. counted for both the A&S major and the A&S minor.

  • CLAS/HIST/POLS 3050 Athenian Democracy (3)

  • CLAS/HIST/PHIL 3160 What killed Socrates? (3)

  • CLAS/ENGL/THEA 4230 Greek Tragedy (3)

  • CLAS/ENGL 4270 Classical Epic Poetry (3)

  • CLAS 4975 Independent Study in Classical Civilization (variable credit)

  • CLAS 4990 Topics in Classical Civilization (variable credit)

  • PHIL 3120 Ancient Greek Philosophy (3)

  • PHIL 4020 Plato (3)
