Kurt Melendy
Lecturer, Double Bass
Department of Music | String Area

Kurt Melendy received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Colorado Boulder
and a Master of Music and Chamber Music from the University of Michigan. He serves
on the Executive Board of Directors for the International Society of Bassists and
is the host of their online Center
Stage Series: a platform focused on curating conversations on artistry, pedagogy,
and the evolving role of the instrument with national and international bassists.
A versatile performer, Kurt has freelanced with orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout
Colorado, Michigan, Montana, and Wyoming, appearing with groups such as Sphere Ensemble
and Opera Colorado, and at festivals including the Colorado College Summer Music Festival.
In Spring 2025, he completed his first solo recording project of Theodor Albin Findeisen’s
Book I Etudes for double bass.
While in school, he held several music leadership positions and completed certificates in College Teaching, Future Faculty Development, and Essentials for Performing Arts Medicine for Instrumental Music Educators. His research centered on body use and management while playing the double bass, work he continues post-graduation as part of a broader commitment to injury prevention and sustainable musicianship. Kurt is also working toward a license in Body Mapping from the Association for Body Mapping Education to further supplement his studies, with the goal of helping bassists worldwide play pain-free.
He envisions a career that bridges performance and pedagogy, helping to redefine the modern bassist’s role both on stage and in the classroom. Outside of music, Kurt enjoys hiking and weightlifting.
