Campus Construction Update for Week of June 7

These are among the construction activities scheduled at the University of Wyoming during the week of June 7-13:

9th Street Closure -- The City of Laramie has started a major reconstruction of 9th Street from Grand Avenue to Lewis Street. This portion of 9th Street will be closed from through Aug. 14.

The construction includes installation of a new water line, storm sewer, curb and gutter improvements and a total rebuild and overlay of the existing road surface. The contractor, Simon Contracting, has designated two pedestrian crossing areas (University and Clark streets), but overall access in the area will be severely limited. UW also will replace sidewalks on the east side of the project area.

Traffic Alert: A 20 mph speed limit is now in effect on 9th, Lewis, Ivinson and 15th streets surrounding the campus.

The UW Facilities Planning office reports the following activities scheduled for the week:

College of Business Expansion and Renovation (Scheduled completion: Fall 2010) -- At the addition, structural steel installation will begin to wind down. Metal framing continues in the basement. On the ground level fire proofing will continue. In the addition, finish work will continue.

ILLC, Information Library and Learning Center (Scheduled completion: Sept. 2009) -- Landscaping work will continue on the exterior. Asbestos abatement will continue in the 1950s portion of the building. Finish work continues on the main level of the 1970s portion of the building and utility rough-ins continues in the basement of the 1970s portion of the building.

Student Health/Cheney International Center -- Next week the punch list walk-through will take place. Balancing of systems will be coordinated with the UW Physical Plant. Work continues on the exterior landscape. Amphitheaters and seating are under construction. Handrails will be completed. Window wells are being cleaned and painted. International programs will move in on June 25 and 26.

Berry Center/Cowboy Dorm/Old Power Plant -- Arrangements are being made for the removal of sod from the Old Power Plant site. Construction fencing will be installed pending city of Laramie approval for the street closure at 10th and Lewis. Requests have been made to begin setting up the staging area and closing the section of the street by mid-June.

WRI Building Removal -- The Western Research Institute buildings east of the Bureau of Mines Building and west of Cowboy Dorm will continue to be moved on weekday evenings and on weekends as weather permits in preparation for Berry Center construction. There will be intermittent closures of the service entrance on Lewis Street, lasting approximately 15 minutes each, as the remaining buildings are loaded on a trailer and removed. Please use extreme caution when using the service entrance on Lewis Street.

War Memorial Stadium Expansion and Improvements (Scheduled completion: Fall 2010) -- The East Stadium parking lot will be closed through August 24. Precast panels will be set this week.

Information Technology Center -- Exterior work on the building and landscaping will proceed depending on the weather. Stone pavers and other work on the west side could start.

College of Law, Moot Court Addition and Renovation -- Activities include: Continue landscaping stone work south and west sides, continue to texture/paint exterior concrete when the wind slows down, continue audio/visual installation, finish wood work, final paint touch up, carpet touch up, some electrical conduit rework for the AV/IT, and continue pre-clean and pre-punch. The HVAC commissioning starts June 8, training starts June 15.

UW Police Facility -- The Police Department has moved into the new facility. Punch list items will be ongoing the next month.

Centennial Complex-- Exterior block repair has started. Staging for the contractor is on the northeast side of the building.

Agriculture C
(Scheduled Completion: June 2009) -- The north restrooms will be modified to increase accessibility. Restrooms on the second floor will be available.

Animal Science (Scheduled Completion: June 2009) --The west restrooms will be modified to increase accessibility. East restrooms will be available.

Corbett Building (Scheduled Completion: July 2009) -- New restrooms will be created in the main lobby. Access to Women's locker room will be periodically interrupted.

General Classroom Renovations Phase 2 (Scheduled completion: Aug. 21) -- Classrooms to be renovated this summer include, Bioscience 217, 218, 219, 220 and Engineering 1045, 2112, 3108, 3109, 3110, 3111, 3112, 3114. Staging area will take up four spaces behind the Engineering Building. Electrical work is ongoing.

Fine Arts (Scheduled Completion: July 2006) -- A new family restroom will be created near Room 226. Construction will not occur during scheduled classes.

The UW Physical Plant reports the following activities scheduled for the week:

Concrete and Asphalt -- The annual concrete and asphalt project will begin in the next week. As specific areas are scheduled, updates will be included in the weekly construction report. The project will continue most of the summer on various areas of the campus.

Fuel Facility -- The landscaping portion of this project should be completed by next week.

9th Street from Lewis Street to Grand Avenue -- Construction continues. Access to the Speech and Hearing Clinic will be maintained via Clark Street. Additional signage has been posted at 8th and Clark streets to direct people to the parking lot on the west side of the Health Sciences Building.

Gibbon Street -- Drainage work will occur on Gibbon Street between 15th and 17th streets in front of Shipping and Receiving. Please be cautious of heavy equipment in the area.

Ross Hall -- Electricians will be replacing lights on the first floor next week. Painting prep will occur on the first floor Friday, June 12 and painting will occur on Saturday, June 13.

19th Street -- Installation of new lights along 19th Street between Harney and Willett will continue once the light poles arrive. Please watch for trucks and equipment in the area.

Fine Arts -- Re-roofing part of the building continues. The staging area is on the southwest side of the building. The southwest entry will be closed throughout the project. Please use another entrance. Work should be complete in mid-June.

Biological Sciences -- Construction of new walls in the building continues in the northwest stairwell. Drywall work and painting will occur in the Southwest stairwell. The stairwells are closed while the work proceeds. Please use the elevator or another stairwell during construction. In case of an emergency the stairway will not be locked at any time during construction.

Physical Sciences -- No construction will occur next week on the stairwells in Physical Sciences.

Old Engineering -- Concrete work has been completed at the front entrance.

Engineering -- Painting will resume on the fifth floor next week.
