University of Wyoming nursing alumni are invited by our accrediting body, the Commission
on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), to comment on proposed changes to accreditation
standards, assessing whether their "Proposed Standards" and key elements are valid
and reliable indicators of quality in nursing education.
The Proposed Standards are used in the accreditation of baccalaureate and master's
degree programs in nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs, and post-graduate
APRN certificate programs nationally.
Among the most substantive of the proposed changes are:
- Changes to the structure and organization of key elements throughout the standards,
yet there are still four standards overall.
- Separation of key elements in Standard I related to the mission, goals, and expected
program outcomes.
- Updating the Criteria for Evaluation of Nurse Practitioner Programs (National Task
Force) from the 2012 to the 2016 edition.
- Changes in Standard III to separate the requirement to incorporate professional nursing
standards and guidelines into individual key elements for each program type (degree
and certificate).
- The addition of language related to exposing students to individuals with diverse
life experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds (Standard III, Key Element III-G).
- The addition of language related to fostering interprofessional collaborative practice
in clinical practice experiences; and clarification regarding the incorporation of
appropriate clinical practice experiences for each program type and track (Standard
III, Key Element III-H).
- Clarification of reporting expectations relative to program completion (Standard IV,
Key Element IV-B).
- Changes to Standard IV to create separate key elements for assessing student achievement
related to NCLEX-RN® pass rates and student achievement related to certification pass
rates (Key Elements IV-C and D).
- Clarification to focus on aggregate (rather than individual) faculty outcomes data
(Standard IV, Key Elements IV-G and H).
- Changes related to analysis and assessment of achievement of outcomes in the key elements
throughout Standard IV.
