My practice areas of experience have been focused on creating environments and communities in which children and families can thrive. This has included school social work, as well as nonprofit work in the arenas of child welfare, family visitation and mediation, child care, and housing. Through my experience in philanthropy and organizational development, I have developed an interest in how our services are managed and funded, including the focus of power, decision making, and policy.
Social work is not simply a set of skills or a specific knowledge base. Although it involves both skill and knowledge, social work as a vocation is a way of thinking, of relating to people and of interacting with the world. Social work education, therefore, must be a deliberate process of creating a dynamic, supportive learning environment through which students can evolve into the role of Social Worker.
I strive to provide educational opportunities that address each student’s individual learning needs, while bringing the concepts presented in the course into focus in the “real world” of social work practice. The individual learning needs of students involves their learning styles and preferences, of course, but it also includes supporting their needs as developing professionals working to incorporate new concepts and experiences into their understanding of themselves and society.
