Religious history scholar Laurie F. Maffly-Kipp will speak about Mormon temple dedications Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. in the University of Wyoming College of Education auditorium. A reception and light refreshments will follow.
In her lecture "The Clock and the Compass: Steering toward Zion," Maffly-Kipp refers to the 1983 Mormon temple dedication in Santiago, Chile. She will describe Mormon temple dedications and how they are used to indigenize churches in countries other than the United States. She will also delve into the problems that arise from the need for Mormons to anchor in time and space in locations far from Utah.
A specialist in religion in the American West, Maffly-Kipp is the chair of the Religious Studies department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has written many articles on Mormonism, is working on an introductory text on the religion and wrote the introduction to a Penguin Classics edition of the Book of Mormon.
