University of Wyoming faculty and students work with "preceptors" - nurses who mentor our students in a variety of clinical settings. Recently our school introduced a new award to recognize preceptors, especially those who go above and beyond. Students nominate preceptors for this award from each of our programs.
The preceptor chosen from the Basic BSN program is Anne Wallace, who is employed by North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. The University of Wyoming School of Nursing student who wrote the winning nomination said,
I am nominating my Senior Capstone Practicum Preceptor, Anne Wallace. She deserves
special recognition because she is an outstanding preceptor and mentor. I looked forward
to my rotation each and every day because Anne created a challenging but comfortable
learning environment. She encouraged me to ask questions, practice my skills and interact
with the patients. Anne supported me every step of the way and continued to look for
learning opportunities to make sure I got the most out of my time there. I look up
to Anne as a role model and a nurse I will strive to be like when I become a registered
nurse. She constantly has a smile on her face; she is extremely positive; she demonstrates
tremendous professionalism; she works great with her coworkers; she treats patients
with respect and dignity; her bedside manner is exceptional; she constantly strives
to be better; she is patient; she is flexible and is able to handle anything the day
might bring. She made me feel as if I was her teammate, not just her student. She
made sure to introduce me to everyone on the floor, including the doctors and the
manager. In no time, other staff started to recognize me as part of the team. She
made me feel important and never once did I feel I was a burden to her.
Throughout my time with Anne on the Ortho/ Neuro/ Surgical Unit at North Colorado
Medical Center, I was able to further develop my confidence, knowledge, skills and
professionalism as a new nurse. I quickly became proficient and confident in my role
on the unit. I never expected to have such an amazing Capstone experience and learn
so much in such a short amount of time. I attribute much of that to having Anne as
a preceptor. I honestly can say that without Anne, I would not feel as excited to
begin my journey as a professional nurse. I hope other senior students in the future
have the opportunity to work with her because she is exceptional.”
