University of Wyoming faculty and students work with "preceptors" - nurses who mentor our students in a variety of clinical settings. The Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing, in an effort to recognize preceptors--especially those who go above and beyond--presents an award annually to a preceptor in those UW School of Nursing programs with clinical components. Students nominate preceptors for these awards.
The preceptor chosen from the BRAND program for 2019 recognition is Shannon Church, who was working as a nurse in the OB Departmet at Banner Health Torrington Community Hospital at the time she precepted our student. The student who nominated our winner said the following:
Shannon has been an excellent preceptor. She has been diligent in helping me meet my goals. She continually asked others to allow me to do any skills that they had; my first day in Torrington she had me insert an NG tube, male urinary catheter, female urinary catheter and several IV's. She continued from there to remind everyone—including the ER—to call if they had anything. This allowed me to observe and perform a wide array of medical procedures. Shannon carefully led me through how to plan a shift, chart and do each task with excellence. She continually quizzed me on medication, charting and skills. She pushed me to continually improve and be excellent. She has very high standards for nursing care and conveyed them to me daily. I feel she has set me on a path to be an excellent nurse also, and I am thankful for her time and effort.
