2018 Preceptor Recognition

Basic BSN Program

University of Wyoming faculty and students work with "preceptors" - nurses who mentor our students in a variety of clinical settings. The Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing, in an effort to recognize preceptors--especially those who go above and beyond--presents an award annually to a preceptor in those UW School of Nursing programs with clinical components. Students nominate preceptors for these awards.

Audra Draper, RN

The preceptor chosen from the Basic BSN program is Audra Draper, who was working as a nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing at Sage West Riverton at the time she precepted our student. The student who nominated our winner said the following:

“I could not ask for a better preceptor. She exceeded my expectations and has taught me so much! Audra is a natural leader, teacher, and advocate. She likes to empower her patients as well as her fellow coworkers and student nurses. Audra not only has amazing nursing and communication skills, but is able to see my strengths and help me to develop my skills. When we set goals and endeavors, she allows me to observe her, but also does not hesitate to send me to other nurses who may have different approaches or have patients necessitating more skills. Because of this, I was able to insert many catheters, walk through the blood transfusion process, remove incision staples, assist in packing wounds, etc.

For IV starts, she arranged for me to start IVs with surgical outpatients, since most of our medical-surgical patients arrived with IVs from the ER. Audra also let me increase my patient load and gave me difficult patients so I could really grow in time management, education, and therapeutic communication. She quizzed me about how I needed to advocate for patients with doctors and pharmacists as well so I could more succinctly and accurately master SBAR with professionals during the shift and with fellow nurses on shift change. Audra also created admission and discharge cheat sheets so that I could troubleshoot the process without having to get her.

These are just a few things Audra did to increase my independence as a nurse during capstone. Needless to say, she went over and above as a preceptor and always did her best to ensure that I was learning at the highest level.”
