Dr. Edward ClennanDr. Edward Clennan is a professor and the Department head of Chemistry.

Nature with photosynthesis elegantly uses supramolecular structures to set up an electron transport chain that spatially separates charge thereby preventing energy wasting charge recombination. This ability to spatially and temporally separate charge allows the efficient harvesting of the energy of the photon to do chemical work. In our laboratory we are studying fundamental issues on how the outer sphere reorganization energy, the movement of solvent and counterions, during electron transfer with charged photoacceptors can be engineered to competitively inhibit energy wasting return electron transfer. These studies to understand environmental influences on electron transfer are relevant to both understanding of photosynthesis and to potenial construction of new materials for energy and photonic applications.
