Donors to the University of Wyoming are a select breed. You may recognize them by the brown and gold stickers on their cars or by the look of pride on their faces when you mention Wyoming. They also may be zealous supporters of the Pokes. They are practical and idealistic at the same time. They believe in education and investing in the future. These are their stories.

Dr. John Pieper

 

John Pieper

“Being a lifelong academician and now a college president, I have a strong belief in the transformative power of higher education and the transformative power of planned giving,” says Dr. John Pieper, UW School of Pharmacy alum (B.S.P., ’77), academic leader, philanthropist, and member of the UW Foundation Board of Directors. “The way you transform places is that you invest in them. A planned gift is the ultimate gift to an institution.”

Professor George McGrail

 

George McGrail

George McGrail is a professor emeritus from the UW College of Business Department of Accounting. A CPA, he served UW for 30 years as well as teaching overseas in Germany and Russia.

George is dedicated, thoughtful, and generous. As an accountant and an accounting professor, he plans ahead while also considering his impact on others. That’s why he set up an endowment for an accounting scholarship for juniors and seniors with financial need—the George McGrail Accounting Scholarship. Then he included UW in his estate plan.

Vicki Taylor

Alum Vicki Taylor is remembering UW in her estate plan. She is utilizing her retirement accounts to establish a fund to support the University of Wyoming’s Cowboy Joe mascot program as well as a student internship at the American Heritage Center and UW Club Baseball or the Toppan Rare Books Library. Taylor graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1978 with a bachelor’s in elementary education. She now works for Arapahoe County in Centennial, Colorado.

UW law alum Larry Weinberg is an expert in a lot of things, but it all comes together for him in sustainability. Sustainability—bringing people and projects together to ensure our futures—is the focus of his estate gift to UW as well as his years of generosity since his graduation.

Georgene Hager LeBar

Georgene Hager LeBar loved children. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to have any of her own; so she focused on helping others, including using her estate to support students at the University of Wyoming—including building the new indoor track.

“At the heart of her was an incredible desire to help people and to give,” says Erin Hager, Georgene’s niece.

Tom Stroock

Ambassador Thomas Stroock was a passionate and dedicated public servant whose generosity to his adopted home state of Wyoming and to its university extends way beyond his lifetime.

Tom’s large bequest to UW continues his support of the Stroock Professorship of Natural Resource Conservation and Management, which he and his wife Marta established in 1988.

Bill Campbell’s unrestricted gift to UW Athletics is a gift of faith. Why? Because a gift that is unrestricted can be used strategically in the areas where it is most needed; and it shows how much Bill believed in Wyoming’s university, particularly its football team.

Violet Dinwiddie

 
Violet Dinwiddie

Violet Dinwiddie, who was born and raised on a ranch near Laramie, turned 100 years old in 2009.

When she sold her house in Laramie after retiring to Arizona, Violet created two charitable remainder unitrusts—one that provides scholarships to students in the the University of Wyoming College of Agriculture and the other to support research in wildlife and livestock diseases.

Ron and Lynne Pulley

When Ron and Lynne Pulley of Huntley, Wyoming, began thinking about retirement, they chose a plan that would not only give them a secure income but that would also benefit something that they strongly believe in—agriculture. As a result of their involvement with the the University of Wyoming College of Agriculture, they funded a charitable gift annuity in 2008 that is used to support graduate assistants in the Department of Animal Science.

Jim Ehernberger

Jim loves the railroad. He saw his first train at the age of 4 and has never looked back.

He is a world-renowned photographer of trains, and he has amassed one of the largest collections of Union Pacific and transportation-related material—a collection that he wants to share with others. And so, since 1995 Jim has been working with Rick Ewig, former associate director of the American Heritage Center (AHC), to organize and donate his collection.

U.S. Senator Cliff Hansen

Cliff Hansen casts a long shadow. He was governor of Wyoming from 1963 to 1967 and then represented Wyoming to the U.S. Senate from 1967 to 1978. During his political career, he fought hard for Wyoming and looked after its interests.

After a lifetime of service to and support of Wyoming and its university, Cliff created the Clifford Peter Hansen Excellence Fund in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
