Breadcrumb Navigation

Breadcrumb navigation, or breadcrumbs, is a type of secondary navigation that shows users where they are within your site's hierarchy. Displayed as a horizontal list of links above your page title, breadcrumbs let visitors return to previous pages as they move into deeper parts of your site. Every page has a breadcrumb and the breadcrumbs are there to help your site's visitors keep track of where they are when they are researching a program, service, department, or unit at the university.

Step-by-Step Instructions – Setting a Custom Breadcrumb

Let's cover the steps for adding a custom breadcrumb to a page and what to watch out for as you change page and folder names. We strongly encourage you to follow along with the video tutorial above the first time you set one.

Locate the page whose breadcrumb you want to change and check it out for editing. Custom breadcrumbs can be set on any page except an index page.

step 1

Go to the Properties tab and scroll down to the Custom Breadcrumb text field under Custom Settings.

step 2

Type the text you want the breadcrumb to display. If you leave this field blank, the breadcrumb defaults to the page heading, which means you can also change a breadcrumb at any time by changing the page heading itself.

Folder-level breadcrumbs can only be changed by a CMS administrator. Submit a help ticket inside the CMS using the Request Help gadget and we'll make those changes for you.

step 4

Every site and folder must have an index page. This is how the navigation file and breadcrumbs identify your site's structure. Renaming or recycling an index page will break the page.

step 5

Changing the name of a page or folder changes its URL. Anything linking to the old URL from outside the CMS, such as newsletters, emails, or QR codes, will break.
