Porter was raised in Cody, Wyoming, where he spent many summers working on a family dairy farm. After graduating from high school, he served a religious mission in Dallas, TX and Portugal, where he became fluent in Portuguese and developed a deep appreciation for serving people with diverse backgrounds. Porter later earned a bachelor's degree in exercise science from Brigham Young University, where he conducted research on bone and cartilage health in ultramarathon runners and met his wonderful wife. During his undergraduate years, Porter volunteered in the emergency department and hospice settings while also working as a research assistant and biometric health screener. These experiences strengthened his passion for medicine, learning, and service. In his free time, Porter enjoys hiking, pickleball, spikeball, playing the piano, and spending time with loved ones.
