Controversial talk show host Chris Matthews' will
give a public presentation Wednesday, April 15, at 1:30 p.m. in the
University of Wyoming College of Arts and Sciences auditorium.
His presentation, titled "The Presidency of Barack Obama," will focus on
the many challenges ahead for the newly elected president.
Retired Wyoming Sen. Alan K. Simpson and his brother, Peter, the
university's Distinguished Simpson Professor in Political Science, will
moderate the presentation.
One of America's most recognizable political commentators, Matthews has
covered the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first all-races election in
South Africa, the Good Friday Peace Talks in Northern Ireland and the
funeral of Pope John Paul II, among many significant events. He has also
covered each U.S. presidential election campaign since 1988.
Matthews has anchored his own television program since 1994. He also
worked 15 years as a print journalist -- including 13 years as
Washington Bureau Chief for the San Francisco Examiner and served 15
years in politics and government, including four years under President
Jimmy Carter.
In March 2004, Matthews received the David Brinkley Award for Excellence
in Broadcast Journalism. He has also been awarded The Abraham Lincoln
Award from the Union League of Philadelphia and the Gold Medal Award
from the Pennsylvania Society.
Matthews' visit to UW is sponsored by the Milward L. Simpson Fund, the
Simpson Speaker Series, the American Heritage Center and the Political
Science Department.
