Henry J. Harlow, a professor in the University of Wyoming's Department of Zoology and Physiology, will be the featured speaker in the 2009 President's Speakers Series.

Harlow will debut his presentation, titled "Big Lizards, Big Bears and Little Ground Squirrels: The Importance of Comparative Physiology in Wildlife Conservation and Human Medicine," at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, in the UW Agriculture auditorium. He'll give the same presentation in Casper Wednesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. in Room 150 of the UW Outreach Center, 951 N. Poplar St.

The UW President's Speakers Series honors faculty members who are exemplary in balancing the university's educational, research and service goals, and who have made important contributions to the university's national standing. For more information, call the UW Office of Research at (307) 766-5353; or in Casper call UW/CC at (307) 268-2713.

Harlow's presentation emphasizes the importance of a comparative approach to understanding physiological processes and animal adaptation to stressful environments, with specific focus on skeletal muscle performance influenced by immobility, low temperatures and starvation.

In addition to his teaching role at UW, Harlow has served since 1993 as director of the UW-National Park Service Research Center at Grand Teton National Park and since 1994 as an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Biology at Colorado State University.

A graduate of California State University-Fullerton (B.A., ‘66 and M.A., ‘73) and UW (Ph.D., ‘79), Harlow joined the UW faculty as an assistant professor in 1981.
