Bike Commuting

Healthy & Affordable Way to Get to UW

Bike commuting to the University of Wyoming campus is an enjoyable, affordable and healthy way to get around. Biking lets commuters skip the stress of parking and traffic, reduce their carbon footprint and get in some exercise to boost physical fitness—truly a win-win-win! Plus, with stunning campus views and breathtaking surrounding landscapes, your ride is made even better on those crisp mornings.

Registering Your Bike

We encourage all bikes that are parked or ridden on UW’s campus to be registered! Registering your bike helps with theft recovery.

The bicycle registration process is simple and quick. Bring your bike to the UW Police Department at 1010 E. Ivinson Street in the Ivinson Parking Garage. There, you will pay a one-time $5 fee to register your bike. UWPD will gather the necessary information and provide you with your registration sticker.

Use the UW Campus Bike Map to explore bike paths and find bike racks on campus. The Laramie Bike Map helps you access bike paths around the community.

The UW Outdoor Program provides bikes for rent for the semester to UW students, faculty and staff through the Pokes Spokes' Bike Library.

You can also rent mountain bikes and biking gear for the day or weekend.

ASUW provides bike repair tools and an air pump station on the southwest corner of the Physical Sciences Building. Another station is located between the Union and Half Acre.

For Presta valves, you will need to visit the UW Outdoor Program for an adapter or ask for their pump.

  • Road Rules: Cyclists are expected to adhere to the same traffic laws as automobiles, including riding in the same direction as traffic (not against it), yielding to pedestrians and stopping at all stop signs.
  • Sidewalks: A Laramie city ordinance prohibits cycling on sidewalks.
  • On campus: Cyclists must respect “Dismount Zones” and walk their bikes when signs indicate.
  • Riding at Night: Cyclists are required to have a light.

Securing Your Bike: Most thefts can easily be prevented by properly securing your bike with an adequate lock to a secure parking facility such as a bike rack.

Parking Your Bike: DO NOT lock your bike to handrails, obstruct sidewalks, ramps or doorways. Bikes parked in these areas will be ticketed and/or impounded by UWPD.

Students living in the residence halls can rent an enclosed bike locker for the semester.
