WyGisc Certification

The University of Wyoming hosts the Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center (WyGisc). This program offers some certifications for its Undergraduate and GIST Graduate degree students. These certificates are voluntary. These certificates do not lead to licensure and do not guarantee employment. Please contact Beth McMillan at gist@uwyo.edu or 307-766-2532 for more information. Below is the information on the following certificates offered by WyGisc.

Undergraduate Certificates

Certificate in GIS

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is at the core of geospatial science, providing the tools and methods for collecting, managing, and analyzing spatial data. A modern GIS is powerful; it can be used to ask and answer questions about geographic phenomena on your laptop, online, or in high-performance computing environments. A GIS can be used to make simple or complex maps (cartography), to build and analyze complex spatial networks, or to combine spatial data layers to answer questions across geographic scales in science, engineering, business, and the humanities. Please see the website below for more information.

Certificate in Remote Sensing

Remote sensing is the science of using data collected by sensors carried on satellites, aircraft, drones, and other platforms to learn about the earth system. The certificate in remote sensing teaches you how remotely sensed data are collected and analyzed using state-of-the-art image processing techniques. Please see the website below for more information.

Graduate Certificates

Graduate Certificate in GIS

The 15-credit online graduate certificate in GIS provides advanced rigorous training in the core of geospatial science at your own pace. Graduate students from across graduate disciplines can apply this training to their research, and working professionals can advance their careers without committing to a full graduate degree. Students wishing to continue into a master’s degree in GIS&T can apply these credits towards our online professional M.S. This GIS certificate gives you the training you need to apply geospatial science to a range of disciplines, including natural resource management, energy, wildlife management, ecology, planning, economics, business, and many others. Please see the website below for more information.

Graduate Certificate in Remote Sensing

Imagery and other data collected by satellites, manned aircraft, and Unmanned Aerial Systems (drones) is increasingly important for studying natural systems and human activities across scales, from global change to urban planning to agricultural management. Our online 15-credit graduate certificate in remote sensing gives you an opportunity to gain a rigorous foundation in remote sensing and digital image processing and to use elective courses to explore specific topics in remote sensing relevant to your studies or career, all at your own pace. Students who later decide to pursue a professional master’s degree at WyGISC can apply these courses to their degree program. Please see the website below for more information.

Graduate Certificate in Unmanned Aerial Systems

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are increasingly being used for applications that range from package delivery to transportation planning to global change science. Our 11-credit online graduate certificate in UAS teaches you about drone platforms and sensors, mission planning, how to safely fly drones, and importantly, how to rigorously manage and analyze the large datasets that drone-based sensors collect. Students explore other areas of remote sensing or geospatial science by choosing a related elective course from the GIST program or other departments on campus (with approval). Adding a UAS certificate to your graduate program gives you expertise in this fast-growing field, and students who decide later to earn our professional master’s degree in GIS&T can apply these courses to their program. Please see the website below for more information.
