GET TO KNOW YOUR FACULTY Series: Susan Christman

What courses do you teach?

  • NURS 3015 (Introduction to Baccalaureate Nursing for RN/BSN Completion program)

  • NURS 3020 (Cultural Diversity in Family Health Care for RN/BSN Completion program)

  • NURS 3630 (Health Promotion for RN/BSN Completion program)

  • NURS 3771 (Long-term Care rotation for BRAND program)

Which program students will have you as a professor ?

Students in the online RN to BSN Completion Program will have me as a professor, as well as students in the BRAND Program who are completing their Long-term Care rotation in Casper, Wyoming.

What brought you to Wyoming, UWYO?

I earned my BSN and MSN degrees from UW. I enjoyed the school and learning environment and wanted to work here!.

How long have you been with UW SoN?

I have been at the UW SoN in full- and part-time capacities since spring of 2005.

Where were you before you came to UW and what were you doing?

Prior to this position, I was a nurse educator at the Casper College Department of Nursing.

What is your passion area?

My passion area is public/community health nursing! I fell in love with this area when I was a student in the Master's in Public Health Nursing Program at UW. I was intrigued to learn more about vulnerable populations and medically underserved populations, especially in rural areas.

Many faculty have “side interests” that help define who they are. Can you share?

Many of my side interests involve family. We have two daughters and twin grandchildren in the region who we enjoy seeing when we can. I am training to run my first 5K in May with my youngest daughter and my husband. I also like to travel. I have yet another side interest in learning more about existing and emerging public health issues.

Do you see a relationship now or in the future with your side interest(s) linking up with nursing?

Yes, I plan to stay current with the public health field, reading about and attending webinars on public health issues affecting populations at local, regional and global levels

What do you like best about teaching?

I enjoy the students the most! One would think that professors wouldn't be able to get to know students in an online environment, but personalities and enthusiasm for learning come through well in an online medium. I especially enjoy how nursing students and RN's in Wyoming and from all around the country come together from both rural and urban locales, sharing their experiences from various work settings! It adds a richness to learning that can't be found in a textbook.
