The College of Health Sciences (CHS) recognized Susan Steiner, associate dean and clinical associate professor, for her contributions as a "teacher of teachers." The following text was read about Steiner in presentation of the 2014 Outstanding Teaching of the Year Award at the annual CHS awards ceremony this spring:
"Steiner has been in various roles of teaching, including designing courses, developing curricula and programs, mentoring faculty and graduate students, problem-solving teaching and learning challenges and creating groundbreaking approaches to teaching, to name a few. She has had the whole gamut of teaching excellence at UW.
"According to one of her colleagues, she has developed into a well-respected 'teacher of teachers.' She has been instrumental in envisioning the new curriculum of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program in 2010 and therefore contributing to every step in the process, including formulating key professional attributes, core curricula concepts, mission statements and teaching philosophy, as well as 'cutting edge' curriculum for DNP education. This led to 23 new course syllabi when the program was rolled out in 2012, and most importantly, a very successful DNP program to date.
"A graduate student says with immense respect, 'Dr. Steiner has a unique combination of maintaining high standards for nursing education and the ability to convey absolute confidence in a student’s ability to meet these standards.'
"Another mentee/graduate assistant of Dr. Steiner thanks her for her growth as a teacher and new instructor. She shares that Dr. Steiner not only meets her regularly and appreciates her efforts, but she has always provided the instrumental support when it comes to guidance in developing effective teaching strategies, enhancing student engagement, willingness to hear student concerns, and introducing her to innovative technologies to be used in a classroom."
